Department for Chemical and Radiological Testing

The Department for Chemical and Radiological Testing is an organizational unit specialized in food and feed analysis.
It performs chemical and immuno-chemical examinations to ensure safety and quality.
In addition, it applies chemical-physical methods for testing pharmaceuticals and biological materials.
Analyses are also carried out on surface, underground, and waste waters.
The Department determines organic and inorganic residues in food and water.
Such residues include toxic elements, mycotoxins, and radiochemical contaminants.
It also evaluates food quality parameters and feed quality indicators.
Activities are implemented through contractual services and institutional collaboration.
Cooperation with the Veterinary Inspection Service is a core part of its work.
The Department also contributes to national and international research projects.
Testing supports the clinical and epizootiological services of the Institute.
These joint efforts address issues in livestock and food production facilities.
All testing methods comply with SRPS ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
The Department has maintained accreditation since 2014.
Modern instrumental techniques are an essential part of its operations.
These include ICP-MS, gamma and beta spectrometry, HPLC, and AAS.
Additional techniques are total combustion, NIR analysis, and ELISA.
Classical methods such as gravimetry and volumetry are also applied.
ICP-MS enables multi-elemental analysis at very low detection limits.
AAS is used for elements present in higher concentrations.
Spectrophotometry provides rapid determination of nitrites, phosphorus, and hydroxyproline.
HPLC is applied to honey composition, aflatoxins, and histamine testing.
ELISA detects mycotoxins and specific contaminants in feed and fish products.
NIR analysis rapidly measures protein, fat, moisture, and collagen in meat.
Gamma spectrometry identifies radionuclides in food, feed, fertilizers, and soil.
The Dumas combustion method determines total nitrogen in biological materials.
Nitrogen content is further used for protein calculation.
All applied methods are reliable, precise, and environmentally sustainable.
